Service-now.com eats its own dog foodAt Service-now.com we love our dog food, and we use our own software to run our business. Internally known as HI (hosted ITIL) the platform houses our standard enterprise applications along with applications developed specifically for internal purposes. The core characteristics of the platform allow for a wide variety of extended uses; even in the marketing department we realize the potential.

In need of a tool to manage the project plan for our annual user conference, Knowledge10, I immediately turned to our platform. As a newcomer to the ITSM marketplace I expect to interface with a tool that matches the simplicity and intuitive functionality of consumer oriented web companies.

Working in our instance, I was able to create a module to house data formerly stored in the Flintstone-standard of project management tools, Microsoft Excel. I added a new database table with what I hear are "fancy" features- reference fields pointing to other tables and customized form layouts. Aside from a little assistance loading the data, task completed sub-five minutes with no technical background.

The possibilities that exist for my new little module seem endless. I could add auto fill functionality, set duration field values and my personal favorite-define a custom report. Other modules our department adds could link back to the data I have created.

The platform was designed with the specific intent that end users should have the power to replicate internal development capabilities. An open, web services approach and an abstracted data layer give even the marketers the ability to become technical geniuses. Delicious.
